How can I troubleshoot SMTP authentication and configuration issues with Mailbutler?

Written by Julia

Mailbutler integrates with various email providers to enhance email tracking and other features. However, SMTP authentication and configuration issues can sometimes disrupt its functionality. This guide provides an overview of common problems and step-by-step solutions to ensure Mailbutler works seamlessly with your email setup.

Overview of SMTP and Mailbutler Integration

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is essential for sending emails. Mailbutler relies on SMTP authentication to enable advanced features like per-recipient delivery and tracking. In some cases, misconfigurations or default settings in email providers like Microsoft 365/Exchange can interfere with these features.

Common Issues and Their Causes

  1. Per-Recipient Delivery/Tracking Not Working: - This feature requires SMTP authentication to be enabled. In Microsoft 365/Exchange environments, SMTP AUTH may be disabled by default, preventing per-recipient tracking from functioning. Standard tracking will still work without enabling SMTP AUTH. - If SMTP AUTH is disabled, you can either enable it or continue using standard tracking without per-recipient details.

  2. Mailbutler Mail Bridge Using Incorrect SMTP Server: - Sometimes, Mailbutler Mail Bridge may auto-select the domain’s MX (inbound) server instead of the correct SMTP submission server. This misconfiguration can lead to errors like "SMTP AUTH is required for message submission on port 465."

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

For Per-Recipient Delivery/Tracking Issues:

  1. Check if SMTP AUTH is enabled in your Microsoft 365/Exchange settings.

  2. If it is disabled and you require per-recipient tracking, enable SMTP authentication for the mailbox.

  3. If enabling SMTP AUTH is not an option, use standard tracking instead, which does not require this feature.

For Mailbutler Mail Bridge Configuration Issues:

  1. Open Apple Mail and change the affected account’s Outgoing Mail Server setting from "Mailbutler Bridge" back to the account’s own SMTP submission server.

  2. In Mailbutler’s Account & Preferences > Integration Settings, remove the affected email account if it appears there.

  3. Uninstall Mailbutler and reinstall the latest version.

  4. Re-authorize Mailbutler for the email account in Apple Mail. During re-authorization, ensure the correct SMTP submission server is selected (e.g., your provider’s SMTP on port 465 SSL or 587 STARTTLS with authentication).
